The Liberty Nickel has had a very colorful history from its very beginning. These are wonderful coins to collect the whole series spanning from 1883 to 1912. It started with the 1883 with Miss Liberty facing left, it first appeared without the word "CENTS" on the reverse only a large V for five cents, these coins were Gold Plated by unscrupulous people who passed them as a $5 Gold Coin. With the Large V, merchants thought they were $5 Gold coins, this raised a ruckus with everyone, later that year they added the word "CENTS" on the reverse to discourage fraudulent people. The other coin in this series that raised eyebrows was the
1913 issue, Hetty Green had the mint strike 5 coins dated 1913, and gave them to her son as a gift, these coins have a very colorful history to them from Mrs. Green to B. Max Mel, Etc. And on January 2014 one 1913 Nickel sold for $3,500,000.00. Yes that right!
